Über GreenGeeks

GreenGeeks is a Canadian-based shared hosting provider with a strong environmental pitch, offsetting 300% of its energy use through renewable energy credits. Positioned as an eco-conscious alternative in the crowded budget hosting space, it targets small business owners and bloggers who want a simple cPanel experience with a sustainability story. The company operates three datacenters (Chicago, Toronto, Amsterdam), serving primarily North American and European audiences with traditional LAMP stack hosting. Our tests reveal a provider with exceptional uptime but middling performance. Over 30, 90, and 365-day periods, GreenGeeks maintained a near-perfect 99.97% uptime—a rare consistency in budget hosting. However, its median time-to-first-byte of 821ms lags behind faster competitors, with fully-loaded page times averaging 2394ms. Geographic response times follow predictable patterns: 208ms in North America, 340ms in Europe, but ballooning to 634ms for Australian visitors. Connection handshakes show the bottleneck lies in server processing (405ms wait time) rather than DNS or TLS setup. Pricing follows the industry’s standard "teaser rate" model—$2.95/month for the Lite plan, jumping to $10.95 at renewal. The entry tier includes 50GB SSD storage, free SSL, and WordPress optimizations. While the 30-day money-back guarantee is standard, GreenGeeks stands out with 24/7 support via live chat, phone, and tickets—a rarity at this price point. Security is a weak spot: despite valid HTTPS, our probes detected zero implemented security headers. For the right user—someone prioritizing uptime and support over raw speed, who values the green branding—GreenGeeks delivers. But performance-conscious sites may chafe at the TTFB, and price-sensitive buyers should brace for the 3.7x renewal hike. It’s a classic tradeoff: you’re buying reliability and ethics, not cutting-edge speed.
