Über Contabo

Contabo is a German cloud provider offering budget-friendly VPS hosting with a focus on raw compute resources over managed services. Headquartered in Germany with eight datacenters spanning Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia, it caters to developers and small businesses needing high storage and bandwidth at low monthly costs. The trade-off is clear: you get generous hardware allocations (like 8GB RAM and 32TB transfer for $5.50/month) but must handle server administration yourself. Performance is Contabo’s weakest area in testing, with a median time-to-first-byte of 699ms and fully-loaded page times nearing 4.6 seconds—acceptable for backend tasks but sluggish for latency-sensitive applications. Geographic response times vary wildly: 65ms in Europe and North America, but 883ms from Asia. Reliability is strong, with 99.91% uptime across all measured periods. Support channels are limited to tickets, phone, and a knowledge base during business hours, reflecting the provider’s self-service ethos. Security basics like HTTPS are implemented, but critical protections like robust security headers are missing. For developers prioritizing cost over speed or hand-holding, Contabo delivers unmatched storage and bandwidth at its price point. Just don’t expect optimizations for global audiences or managed conveniences—this is bare-metal value with admin responsibilities intact.
